12.1 Aggregates

Definition

A moving image aggregate is a Manifestation embodying two or more distinct Works/Variants.1

It is not necessary to create an actual Manifestation Type of “Aggregate Manifestation” in existing Manifestation Type lists.

Defining an aggregate 2 is an intellectual process followed in order to identify and select the particular structure best suited for dealing with the nature and content of such entities in cataloguing.

This chapter explores what constitutes an Aggregate, but also what does not; hence a section looking at the nature of series/serials and newsreels generally in comparison to when they, or episodes from them, may have Aggregates.

  2. the concept and term of Aggregates used in this chapter follows that of FRBR/LRM and EN15907. The German word "Aggregatwerk" used in some German archives is more akin to the concept of the Work Description type "Collection" (see 6.2.1.4 Collection in the section detailing Work Description types. ↩
